Journey to the World Cup of Japan National Team

At the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers in Asia, the Samurai Blue team really destroyed their group. In a group with weaker opponents in terms of stature and level such as Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Myanmar, Japan won all 8 matches. They scored 46 goals and only conceded 2 goals. Especially among them must be mentioned the destruction of opponents such as the 6-0 victory in the first leg and 14-0 in the second leg against Mongolia. In addition, a 10-0 victory over Myanmar, made Japan calmly go into the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup with the first place in the group.

Japan World Cup

By the third qualifying round, Japan fell into Group B with Saudi Arabia, Oman, China, and Vietnam. Compared to Group A, the competition for the two official tickets to Qatar of Group B is more intense and has more interesting surprises. Before the 9th match took place, the official ticket in the group was Vietnam and the competition between the big three, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Australia. The Samurai Blue had a bad start when entering the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup.

A big shock came to Hajime Moriyasu and his students when they lost to Oman from the very beginning with a score of 0-1 despite playing at home. After winning closely with China with a score of 1-0 in the second match, Japan suddenly continued to lose to Saudi Arabia in the third match with a score of 0-1. The defeat put Hajime Moriyasu in danger of being fired. Fortunately for him, the chair was saved by his students as they have won 6 consecutive victories since then.

It is not surprising that experts and fans of Japan and Saudi Arabia are the two teams that have the upper hand in the race in this match. In the 9th match, Japan won 2-0 at the home of Australia to take the top spot before the final round. However, in the last series of matches, Japan and Vietnam held a draw with an even score. This made Samurai Blue drop to 2nd place with 1 point less than the top team Saudi Arabia.

History of participating in the World Cup

Japan was not a major football force until the late 1980s when it fielded a small and amateur squad. Japan has emerged as one of Asia's most successful teams since the 1990s when Japanese football became fully professionalized.

Over the past two decades, the Japanese have invested and are very determined to remake their football. And now we can see their fruitful results. The first time they attended a World Cup was in France in 1998. And since then the Samurai Blues have not missed any World Cup.

Before the 2022 World Cup, Japan had a total of 6 World Cup appearances. The best achievement that this team has achieved is being in the round of 16 in half of the World Cups they participate in. Those were 2002, 2010, and 2018. Although the best achievement was still only at the round of 16, Japan made the world hat off with the way they played. At the 2002 World Cup, Japan only stopped with a close score of 0-1 against Turkey - a phenomenon of the tournament that year.

Eight years later, the Samurai Blue army only fell to Paraguay in the penalty shootout with a score of 3-5 when the two teams drew 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. Not only that, if Japan at the 2018 World Cup was braver and more stable - after leading Belgium 2-0 - then the team going to the quarterfinals that year would probably be Japan.

The stars of the team

In the composition of the Japanese team, accounting for more than half of their share are the stars who are fighting in the top national championships in Europe. But the most prominent of these are the four stars Takumi Minamino, Maya Yoshida, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Takefusa Kubo. This is a fairly even lineup on all lines. To have this talented group of players, Japan has planned training for the past 10 years. Therefore, it is not too surprising that up to this point, the Japanese team is the most impressive team.

The most dangerous star of the cherry blossom country is definitely Takumi Minamino - a striker who plays for Liverpool and can leave this summer. He used to have more than 4 years of successful playing for Red Bull Salzburg before being noticed and recruited by the British giant. This year, Monaco confirmed that Minamino has signed a four-year contract extension till June 2026.

Japan Team's top stars

The other player in the attack is Messi Japan Takefusa Kubo - who grew up in Barcelona's famous La Masia and was recruited by Real Madrid. He is currently on loan at Mallorca. Even though Kubo is very young, he can make a difference when he grows up in a high-class football environment in Spain.

Meanwhile, in defense, Sampdoria's Maya Yoshida and Arsenal's Takehiro Tomiyasu are two very important cards of Moriyasu. Maya Yoshida is an experienced central defender with many years of battle in the Premier League and in Serie A. On the other hand, Takehiro Tomiyasu is the new pride of Japanese football while shining at Arsenal.
